IRVING, Texas - The Broncos selected another young offensive mind, Josh McDaniels, as their new head coach. But Cowboys assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Jason Garrett remains a candidate for the Rams' vacancy.
Garrett, scheduled to interview Wednesday in Los Angeles, is among five finalists for the job. Three others - Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and Rams interim head coach Jim Haslett - have already interviewed, and Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is expected to interview Thursday.
The Lions also have expressed interest in Garrett but reportedly might be leaning toward Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Schwartz and Dolphins assistant head coach/secondary coach Todd Bowles, a former Cowboys assistant, have conducted second interviews with Detroit this week.
Irvin's OK
Former Cowboys great Michael Irvin apparently dodged a dangerous situation at a stoplight in North Dallas on Monday night.
Irvin filed a police report stating a passenger in an adjacent vehicle flashed a gun after he rolled down his window. Recognizing the Hall of Fame receiver, however, the men instead began discussing the Cowboys with Irvin and eventually drove away peacefully.
On his radio show Wednesday (ESPN 103.3 FM), Irvin shrugged off speculation that the police report was merely a publicity stunt.
"I was a little bit worried - I was a lot bit worried - about what else was going to happen with those guys, what else they were doing," Irvin said. "The way they got back on the highway said to me, 'Maybe we'll find somebody else since we couldn't do that there.' So yeah, I went ahead with it (the report).
"I don't have another strike to give. So trust me, I wouldn't fill out a false police report."
Deep Six
The Cowboys' six Pro Bowl selections - linebacker DeMarcus Ware, tight end Jason Witten, nose tackle Jay Ratliff, center Andre Gurode, guard Leonard Davis and recently-added offensive tackle Flozell Adams - tie for the team's third-highest total since 1996.
The Cowboys sent nine players to Hawaii in 1996: Troy Aikman, Larry Allen, Ray Donaldson, Nate Newton, Deion Sanders, Jim Schwantz, Tony Tolbert, Erik Williams, Darren Woodson. They also had six selections in 1998: Allen, Newton, Sanders and Woodson along with Leon Lett and Emmitt Smith.
Adams was added as an injury replacement on Tuesday. Davis pulled out of the game to rest a minor foot injury.
