IRVING – If Joe DeCamillis needs to brush up on his Cowboys' history, all he has to do is ask his father in-law, Dan Reeves, the former Cowboys running back and longtime assistant coach.
DeCamillis was named as Bruce Read's replacement as special teams coach. He will be reunited with Wade Phillips, with whom he served as an assistant under Reeves with Denver and Atlanta.
DeCamillis spent the last two seasons as Jacksonville's special teams coordinator. The Jaguars led the NFL in opponents' starting position after kickoffs (24.5-yard line) in 2008 and allowed one kickoff return of more than 40 yards.
Opposing teams averaged 19.9 yards per kickoff return and 8.1 yards per punt return, compared to 21.3 and 10.5 allowed by the Cowboys under Read. Jacksonville's returners averaged 22.5 yards per kickoff return and 9.5 yards per punt return. The Cowboys averaged 22.2 yards per kick return and 6.4 per punt return.
In 13 of his 15 seasons as a special teams coach with the New York Giants (1993-96), Atlanta (1997-2006) and Jacksonville (2007-08), DeCamillis' units have returned a kickoff or a punt for a touchdown.
Briefly: Wide receiver Danny Amendola joined Philadelphia's practice squad. Amendola spent the regular season on the Cowboys' practice squad but declined a 2009 contract offer after the season.
