I was on a TON of draft sites, cowboys draft message boards for 2 months straight.
Let me tell you this, I think a lot of people don't like this draft for ONE REASON, we didn't get a marquee guy, by marquee, I just mean a guy we thought would be a steal if he was their, like a Louis Delmas, or a Sean Smith at safety, hell, even if we picked William Moore, I'm sure everyone would say we could possibly have a steal, and even if we had drafted Guard Duke Robinson, a guard who was rated #1 on almost every board in the country including NFL network and Mel Kipers board, YET Delmas went way early round 2, impossibl we would of got him, Smith went pretty quick after that, and IMO had we selected Duke Robinson, the marquee name, meaning we all KNEW HIM cause he was rated #1 as a guard, if we picked him with our 2nd round pick, and then had the rest of the draft we had, I think we all would of felt better about the draft.
REALITY is, Duke robinson, who some had as a late 1st rounder, most EVERYONE had him in round 2 with no one ever thinking he'd be available in round 3 even, he went in round 5, so while I'm sure we would of all been like BOOYA, we got the #1 rated guard who some had as a possible 1st rounder at pick #51 and then added a good L.B. in round 3 in Jason Williams, and then the rest of the draft IMO would of looked a lot better, BECAUSE we got the name everyone knew in Duke Robinson, instead of picking Brewster in round 3 with Robinson still on the board, WHICH turned out to be the right move since Robinson was passed on al 32 teams for 4+ rounds.
So, IMO I think that's the reason most think it wasn't a good draft, cause with our top pick we didn't get THAT GUY, the one who fell to us like a Duke Robinson, a Herman Johnson, a Hakeem Nicks or Louis Delmas, someone we saw on ESPN a lot prior to the draft.
Cause lets look at what we wanted prior to the draft, and what we came away with.
Us FANS, we wanted a safety, even though we have our 2009 starters in place in Sensabaugh and Hamlin, others all wanted L.B. Marcus Freeman with our top pick at #51, I think Freeman was a 4th or 5th rounder as well, so just goes to show us fans and even the SO-CALLED experts who get piad top dollar to analyze the top 50-60 players or so and spend about 5 minutes on all picks after that really don't know what they're doing, since the NFL scouts, guys who spend the whole year and 10 hours a day over the past 2 months on these guys, they know the real players, not Mayock, or Kiper, or Deion Sanders, or Rich Eisen, or NFLDRAFTSCOUT, or "plug any websites name in here".
As evidence that EVERYONE in the country from NFL network, ESPN, cbs sportsline, nfl draft scout.com, etc.,etc.,etc.,etc., all had Duke Robinson as the CLEAR CUT #1 ranked Guard who might be a late 1st but won't make it out of round 2 and as we all saw, he didn't get drafted till round 5, so what does that tell you?
It tells me that we should trust our scouts and our draft board and not listen to Kiper, Mayock, or any other FREE or PAID website who PRETEND to be experts, cause if they were experts, they'd be hired by an NFL team, I go by what our scouting department says and others as well.
So most wanted a safety, felt we needed safety help bad since Sensabaugh was only a 1 year deal and we needed depth as well, other wanted an I.L.B. cause Brooking was up in age and we lost Burnett, some wanted an O.L.B. pass rusher cause they didn't know how they felt on Spencer and Ellis is getting up in age and price tag and declining, we also needed a decent 4th cornerback as well, and most thought we'd need a 3rd T.E. later in the draft, and most everyone agreed we should alwaya take a Q.B. every year to groom, and most everyone knew we needed a good backup O-lineman to play multiple positions to be a backup for now and compete for Kosier's job thisyear and maybe take over for Flo or Kosier next year..
So, what did we come away with in this draft?
We all felt safety was a need, we got TWO safeties.
We all felt I.L.B. of the future was a need for Brooking, we used our top pick on that guy.
We all felt we needed a good versatille backup O-lineman, we got that with our 2nd pick.
We needed a decent 4th corner, and we took one really late, but if healthy, could of been a 2nd or 3rd rounder and could be a steal.
We needed a 3rd Q.B. to groom behind Romo and Kitna, we got one.
We needed more O.L.B.'s who can rush the passer, I think we got 3 of them.
We needed a 3rd T.E. to replace Curtis, so we got one of those as well.
We also added a kicker for deep kcikoffs who can also cover on coverages and punts and is a physical beast running a 4.5 and benching more then 27 O-lineman.
We added a W.R. late as well.
So, we got everything everyone for months was saying we needed to get, yet most aren't happy cause we didn't get KIPERS #1 guy or the #1 rated guy on such and such a site, etc.
IMO we got what we needed, I would of liked to use an earlier pick on a speedy W.R. who can be a punt return guy, like a Deon Butler, but he was picked way too early for my liking, round 3, and I would of liked to see us grab a huge N.T. to backup Ratliff, but other then that, we got what we all wanted to get, you can't get EVERYTHING in one draft, but we basically almost got everything that all the fans were screaming we needed to get prior to the draft, cause cause they aren't household names doesn't mean squat.
HEre's an example of what I'm sure everyone would of said our draft with the picks we had would of been an A+ draft considering we had no 1st round pick, ready?
Just think back a week ago prior to the draft at these guys, and tell me everyone on here wouldn't be pumped with this draft.
Round 2: O.G. Duke Robinson (#1 rated guard on EVERYONE'S BOARD, what a steal)
Round 3: L.B. Marcus Freeman (NICE, we get a guy most wanted with our 2nd round pick, a guy who can run and cover and hit)
Round 4: O.T. Jamon Meridith (WOW can't believe he was still on the board, some thought he'd be our top pick in round 2, to have him still be on the board in round 4, WOW whatanother STEAL)
Round 4: O.G. Herman Johnson (didn't need another guard, but was too good of value to pass up at this point, WHAT A STEAL, and we now have our O-line SET for awhile)
Round 5: S. Michael Hamlin (WOW, we needed a safety, but there was so much value on the O-line we had to keep taking O-lineman, but can't believe Hamlin is still available, what a steal at this point)
Round 5: D.E. Mitch King, WOW, a lot of cowboys boards just LOVED this kid, can't believe we got him middle of round 5, AWESOME..
Round 5: W.R. Demetrius Byrd, wow, good value at this pick on a W.R. most thought would go earlier, really like the value here)
Round 6: C.B. Mike Mickens (wow, some considered him a 2nd or 3rd rounder, but injuries dropped him, could be a steal with a 6th rounder, it's worth it)
Round 7: I.L.B. Frantz Joseph, some fans thought he'd be a good fit in round 4-5, so to get him this late I really like it a lot. undrafted
Round 7: D.T. Nader Abdallah Wow, I like him, a bargain at this point.
O.K. overall draft
O.G. Duke Robinson
O.G. Herman Johnson
O.T. Jamon Meridith
W.R. Demetrius Byrd
L.B. Marcus Freeman
L.B. Frantz Joseph
D.E. Mitch King
D.T. Nader Abdallah
C.B. Mike Mickes
S. Michael Hamlin
Everyone from Kiper to us fans would be saying WOW WHAT A DRAFT, DEFINATELY HAS TO BE AN A+ considering all this talent and steals we got and we didn't even have a 1st round pick.
Look at all these great players we got, we have our entire O-line of the future, grabbed a good W.R., got and inside and outside L.B. who were great value, and got a C.B. steal late, and got a nice safety to take over for Sensabaugh in Hamlin, and of course Abdallah is a nice 7th rounder and of course Mitch King, who most loved, OMFG, WHAT A DRAFT, I AM IN HEAVEN, this is the best draft Jerry has had in YEARS, WHAT A HAUL!!!!!
Now, I GUARANTEE you that with all those names EVERYONE KNEW, or most everyone knew who followed the draft in the weeks leading up to it, I GUARANTEE YOU that everyone would of gave this draft an A+ with RAVE REVIEWS from Kiper on down.
But, now here's the REALITY of what Kiper and every fan would of said was an A+ draft, I'll give the rounds I picked them in, and the rounds they actually were drafted in.
Round 2: O.G. Duke Robinson (Actual Round 5)
REALITY, we would of over reached by 3 rounds, was a 5th round pick and reality would of been a HORRIFIC PICK.
Round 3: L.B. Marcus Freeman (actual Round 5)
REALITY, would of been a HUGE REACH by 2 full rounds.
Round 4: O.T. Jamon Meridith (actual Round 5)
Round 4: O.G. Herman Johnson (actual Round 5)
Round 5: S. Michael Hamlin (actual round 5)
Round 5: D.E. Mitch King (Actual Round UNDRAFTED)
Round 5: W.R. Demetrius Byrd (actual Round 7)
Round 6: C.B. Mike Mickens (actual Round 7)
Round 7: I.L.B. Frantz Joseph (actual round UNDRAFTED)
Round 7: D.T. Nader Badallah (actual Round UNDRAFTED)
So as you can see with my little mind game on the draft, IMO us fans and the experts even say it wasn't a good draft caue guys were rated higher on KIPERS board of Mayocks board, or cbssportsline's board, or NFLDRAFTSCOUT or blah blah blah, I just showed everyone how the PERCEPTION of a GREAT DRAFT versus the REALITY of what would of been a HORRENDOUS DRAFT had we drafted my players above, yet that smae mock draft I just put up would of been praised by everyone on ESPN and everyone on this site.
Showing how the perception of great player verses the REALITY of how good the players supposedly were rated by the experts and ourselves can really make us think our draft was a bad one, but IMO the reality is we stayed to our board and drafted a ton of guys that will help out our team, and just cause it wasn't the MARQUEE NAMES, was still a good draft.
Most everyone prior to the draft if I put my mock I just made verses our actual draft side by side would of said my fake mock would of not only been head and shoulders ahead of our actual mock, but most would of called it UNREALISTIC to think guys like Meridith and Duke Robinson, etc., would be LONG GONE the time we picked, etc., YET the REALITY would of been that my fake mock would of been a HORRENDOUS, HORRENDOUS job by our scouting department, but we'd never know that, we'd just say, HELL, Kiper had this guy rated such and such and going by that guy and other websites I looked at, our draft was AMAZING and we got tons of steals, but I just showed you that not only would our perception of been AWESOME STEALS, but the REALITY would of been MAJOR MAJOR REACHES in EVERY ROUND and most reaches were by 2 FULL ROUNDS.
So, bottom line, THROW OUT Kiper's and Mayocks, and some websites rankings of players, and GORGET what they said, and FORGET that we passed on the #1 ranked O.G. in Duke Robinson, and how CRAZY Jerry was for taking Brewster over Robinson, yet Robinson didn't get drafted till round 5.
So I think you guys can see, you don't like the draft ONLY BECAUSE it wasn't the players you KNEW Persay, or you wanted us to get, or guys you THOUGHT weree rated much higher by Kipers board, so it was a bad draft, but I think I just proved the perception of a bad draft verses the REALITY of one.
