We complteyl over hauled the bottom of our roster with a ton of picks in this years draft, AND right now we seem to have depth ALL ACROSS the board basically.
Couple that with a whole new draft classs in '10, and we don't need to sign average F/A's for depth and what not, so we should just go out and make ONE BIG SIGNING.
So, what position then?
I say N.T. or D.E. cause Ratliff I LOVE but is too small for N.T. and would transition perfectly to L.D.E. if we got a true N.T., OR keep him at N.T. if we want and get a pro-bowler to replace Spears, our WEAK LINK in our front 7, everyone else in our front 7 can MAKE A PLAY on any given play EXCEPT SPEARS.
Just looked at potential f/A's and I think any one of these would put our defense OVER THE TOP.
If we got wilfork or Hampton, we move Ratliff to Spears spot, or can even move Rat to R.D.E. and Olshansky to L.D.E. if we like.
And if we get Seymour, we keep Rat at N.T. and IMO a D.E. like Seymour to replace a guy like spears would REALLY put our defense inot ELITE ELITE Category.
Top Defensive Tackles:
Vince Wilfork, New England Patriots (27)
According to the latest from inside the Patriots organization, the team is working everyday on trying to get a new deal done for NT Vince Wilfork. For five seasons since the Patriots drafted him 21st overall, Wilfork has been consistently dominant as the anchor of the Patriots 3 man front. The team appears to have placed a higher priority in getting him under a long-term contract than fellow linemen Richard Seymour who is a couple years older. Barring a complete misfortune, Wilfork will be on the Patriots for several years longer.
Richard Seymour, New England Patriots (29)
Seymour has been coined one of the best defensive linemen of the decade and made himself a fixture in Honolulu prior to the last two seasons, including one curtailed by injury. Seymour has the ability and experience of playing 4-3 DT and 3-4 DE, which will consequently result in a long list of interested buyers should he reach the open market. The Patriots will likely wait until the offseason to begin serious talks with Seymour, but he’s publicly stated that he would love to remain a Patriot.
Casey Hampton, Pittsburgh Steelers (31)
Hampton has been the nose of the Steelers 3-4 defense, but his age in addition to his workout regimen could scare the Steelers from jumping into contract negotiations right away. Though Hampton came into camp in shape this year, he’s been known to show up out of shape in the past. Still, the Steelers have had great success with the 4-time Pro Bowler at the heart of their tenacious D. The Steelers will look into re-signing Hampton, but probably not until after they’ve locked up a couple other key players.
