After some discord within Bob Hayes' family over the handling of his Pro Football Hall of Fame selection during Super Bowl weekend, there's apparently no debate about who will present the Jacksonville legend for induction at the official ceremony Aug. 8 in Canton, Ohio.
Hayes' only son among five children, Dallas resident Bob Hayes Jr., has been chosen to be his father's presenter after a discussion among family members before the Pro Bowl in Hawaii this past weekend. Bob Sr., who played 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, died in 2002 from prostate cancer, along with liver and kidney complications.
"That's his only son, so who else would be more fitting to receive his dad's honor?" said Hayes' daughter, Westine Lodge, a Jacksonville resident. "The family is quite pleased with Bob Jr. doing it. He will be unveiling the [Hall of Fame] bust and making the acceptance speech."
The issue over how the ceremony in Canton would unfold became clouded last week after several members of Hayes' family, including Lodge and Bob Jr., took offense to Hayes' biological half-sister, Lucille Hester, addressing the media upon his selection at the Super Bowl without including other members of the family.
Hester, Bob Jr., ex-wife Janice Hayes-Mohl of Dallas and half-sister Georgette Sanders of Jacksonville made the trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl halftime ceremony honoring the six Hall of Fame inductees. After discussions there and among other family members, it was decided that Bob Jr. would serve as his father's presenter in Canton.
"There was no fight on Lucille's part [to be the presenter]," said Hayes' nephew, Victor, a Jacksonville resident. "I don't know what Lucille's intentions originally were, but that's the conclusion everyone came to."
Hayes, who caught 371 passes for 7,414 yards and 71 touchdowns in his career, will be inducted along with cornerback Rod Woodson, defensive end Bruce Smith, guard Randall McDaniel, Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson and the late Derrick Thomas.
