Tales From The Inside: What Obama Told Republicans By Paul Bedard, Washington Whispers January 27, 2009
President Barack Obama went to Capitol Hill today to push Republicans to back his $825 billion stimulus plan. While they probably won't, he won points for reaching out to the minority, making good on campaign promises. What's more, chief of staff Rahm Emanuel plans to fete more Republicans tonight. At the meeting today, Obama's comments were to be off the record, but we've got some notes on how it went down. Here's what we were told and E-mailed from various sources:
- "Obama is speaking now. He is talking about how bad the economy is and that it is deteriorating rapidly."
- "Mentioned Caterpillar and Microsoft having to layoff workers."
- "The president said that the stimulus is 'just one leg in multi leg stool to get economy going.'
- "He wants to deal with the housing market more aggressively."
- "This is just the first step."
- "Obama said the he would 'like not to have to spend the stimulus money.'"
- "He also said that he has 'no interest in increasing government just to increase the size of government.'"
- On taxes, "Obama says tax relief for some working families must come from payroll so even families who don't pay income taxes get relief and they will spend it."
- On GOP complaints, "he said that 'there will be time to beat him up and a time for politics. He said I understand that and I will watch you on Fox News and feel bad about myself.'"
- "Obama said if we can do more small business tax relief, 'we should do it, but I am just as concerned about the long term impact of tax cuts as I am about spending.'"
- "He also issued concern about the debt. 'I will be judged by the legacy I have left behind. I don't want to leave our children with a legacy of debt. I am inheriting an annual yearly debt of over $1 trillion.'"

I like the fact that President Obama is skirting party lines to do what he feels is best for the country. I may not agree with everything he does, but he is coming down on my side of the isle more than I had expected. It is nice to know that he has been seeking experts not bogged down in the political quagmire ala Warren Buffett. I am crossing my fingers that he can get this country headed in the right direction. Prossman I agree he is being alot more bi-partisan that I thought. Whats funny is the far left are having fits because of this. He still however, leans way to far left for my liking in regards to social and foreign policies. As to the stimulus I don't see how this is going to help the economy at all. Seems all ANY of the politicians want to do is help big business. What about us common folk? Where is our stimulus. Don't give me no crap about $1000 tax cut. When he is going to do away with all of Bush's other tax breaks. $1000 don't mean jack when talking about a 12 month period. This whole bailout thing was botched from the beginning. IT WAS A JOKE!!

and if theyr want to help out people who are ready to contribute to the economy, forgive student loan debt!!! As far as bailouts go. How bout actually bailing out the homeowner. Not one homeowner I know that is in foreclosure has been helped out with that first 700 billion dollar bailout. But it sure helped out the banks

The number one problem with the bailouts is ZERO accountability to how the money is being spent. NO to bailouts let the markets take care of themselves. With ya on the govt takeing over our private industries. Balance your d@mn checkbook , then come talk to me about running industries. Prossman

Are you saying "The One's" plan is going to be any different? If so show us where it already is different, king shrubs plan was to give 750 billion to the financial industry flat out, bail out, no direction on how to use it and no plan for what to expect. consequently BILLIONS of that money was paid out in the form of BONUS'S to those company's executives!! and other assorted extreme golden eggs. the current package does nothing for those people but is instead to be used for financial shortcomings on the state level in education and law enforcement (effectively SAVING JOBS-maybe yours!!) and for shovel ready projects (more jobs) and for tax cuts for the middle class, as well as a small bit towards green initiatives. this is the last time i do your research for you glen!! ;-)

You have yet to show what this stimulus package is going to do but give more money to businesses. More tax payer money going to bail out failed businessmen.
