Collinsworth picks Haley for Chiefs

NBC Sports analyst Cris Collinsworth expects Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley to become the Chiefs’ next head coach.
Collinsworth, who spent time with Haley before broadcasting the Cardinals’ NFC first-round win over Atlanta and will cover the Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh, said Haley’s star has risen higher than anyone’s during the playoffs.
“I think he’ll be the coach in Kansas City,” Collinsworth told me Tuesday on a teleconference. “I’m watching what’s happening with all the (new) coaches, and we’ve seen some of the defensive coaches come off the board, and the one guy nobody is talking about that has surprised me, and it’s because (the Cardinals) flew so far under the radar screen, was Haley. He’s not under the radar screen anymore.
“The biggest winner who has come out of this run by the Arizona Cardinals has been Todd Haley.”
Collinsworth was impressed with how Haley handled himself during some heated sideline discussions with quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Anquan Boldin in the NFC championship game on Sunday.
“For Boldin to be getting in his face in the middle of the most significant drive in half a century for the Arizona Cardinals,” Collinsworth said, “and to keep it together and call the plays to march it downfield against one of the best defenses in the league, showed great presence.”
Bettman weighs in
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, as he did when the Pittsburgh Penguins flirted with Kansas City, is pressuring officials on Long Island to replace aging Nassau Coliseum with a new arena.
“That building has to be replaced,” Bettman said on his XM Radio show last week after the Islanders scheduled an exhibition game for next September in Kansas City against the Los Angeles Kings, who are owned by AEG, the company that also manages the Sprint Center.
“If I were (Islanders owner) Charles Wang, I wouldn’t sign an extension on that building for a new lease under any circumstances,” Bettman said.
The Islanders’ lease runs through 2015 at Nassau Coliseum, but leases have been known to have out clauses.
A new arena is part a proposed $2 billion Lighthouse Project, a 100-acre complex that would include a hotel, retail stores, offices, convention center, luxury apartments and a minor-league ballpark. But there are still hurdles.
Don’t miss this
Jefferson (Mo.) College, 19-0 and the nation’s No. 1-ranked Division I women’s junior-college team, will visit Penn Valley at 6 tonight.
Jefferson, which is in the St. Louis area, has several Kansas City-area players, including Danielle Adams (Lee’s Summit); Cherakie Barrett (Raytown); LaToya Johnson (Lincoln Prep), Shalisa Williams (Bishop Miege) and Tolisa Williams (Miege). Adams was a first-team all-American last year.
