IRVING, Texas - Forgive me for sounding disrespectful, but seriously, it's a question that many of us have asked several times this season, and especially here in the last few days.
You keep waiting for things to turn back to normal, but now it's gone to a new level and may even reach a stratosphere that would be downright mindboggling.
Again, forgive me for asking, but:
The Cardinals . . . really???
Seriously? These guys are a game away from the Super Bowl? Not only one win, but another home win at a place the Cardinals are 7-2 this season.
Now, it certainly won't be easy, having to beat a grizzled Eagles team that has already won road games against the Vikings and Giants - two of the loudest stadiums in the NFC. The Eagles don't ever seem scared of anyone, much less . . . the Cardinals?
Ok, it appears I should wake up to reality. Because the answer is an overwhelming "yes," as in, yes the Cardinals.
Just using Cardinals and Championship Game in the same sentence is odd. It's even crazier to think of Arizona as the host.
The last time the Cardinals even played an NFL Championship Game was exactly 60 seasons ago. It has been 61 years since that franchise hosted a championship.
Ironically enough, both games were against the Eagles. That would be the Philadelphia Eagles. See, they haven't changed.
For the Cardinals, that was two cities ago. Yeah, the Chicago Cardinals were playing for championships back in the late 1940s. The franchise moved to St. Louis in 1960, and for 28 years played in just three postseason games, losing them all.
Let that sink in. The city of St. Louis saw the hometown team play three playoff games - that's one per decade. And they lost them all.
This Cardinals team right now is going to play three playoff games in three weeks. One more home win and they'll advance to their first-ever Super Bowl. Currently, the Cardinals are one of six teams to have never even played in a Super Bowl, along with Houston, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Detroit and New Orleans.
Now, it's not like the Cardinals all of a sudden become an NFL power when they moved to Arizona in 1988. It took them 10 years to get to the playoffs where, of course, they beat the Cowboys in 1998. In fact, the two playoff games that season were the only two for the Arizona Cardinals before this year.
So when we double-take the TV screen to make sure we're seeing it right, and when we shake our heads in realization that the Cardinals are a win away from the Super Bowl, it's more of a reflection on the team, the franchise and the uniforms, more than it is the current players and coaches.
This current group of Cardinals can play. They've got some talent. They've got arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL. If that's not enough, they've probably got another top-10 receiver as well.
Their quarterback has won a Super Bowl, two MVPs and has been selected to four Pro Bowls, along with a couple of Stockboy of the Week awards and a few Arena Football wins, too.
The Cardinals have talent, and it's not just offensively. If we learned anything from the Cowboys' game in Arizona this year - other than the fact that special teams is a REAL problem for Dallas - it's that the Cardinals have an aggressive defense that will not be pushed around. Instead, Arizona's defense did most of the pushing that day.
Now, we'll get back to that game in a moment, for in my mind, it was the real turning point in the Cowboys' season.
But when it comes to the Cardinals, they may not be the most talented team in the NFL, but in today's league, you don't have to be. You need talent, for sure. But that's not where you win.
You need some aggressive defense. Check.
You need a quarterback who can be the difference. Check.
You need an offense that can score some points. Check. Check. Check.
And maybe more than anything, you need a group of players - I think they call it a "team" - that will stand together and rally for each
