Former Cowboys coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer said Tuesday they were not surprised that owner Jerry Jones is sticking with Wade Phillips.
"I didn't think Jerry would change regardless of what happened down the stretch with the situations with the assistant coaches and head coach right now," said Johnson, who won two Super Bowl titles in Dallas during the 1990s.
"I felt he would stay with what he had and try to make that work."
Speaking on a Fox conference call to promote the Bowl Championship Series, Switzer said he believes every coach in pro football deserves at least four years. Some may get three, but if the team isn't headed in the right direction, changes will be made.
"I'm not surprised," Switzer said. "Jerry, I didn't think that he would make a change. They stink right now. [Tony] Romo might be an overrated quarterback and gunslinger. ... He takes too many chances, gambles.
"I just know that Jerry doesn't want to do that, and he's certainly going to give it another year."
Jones embarrassed: Jones was emphatic when asked how he felt about Sunday's loss to the Eagles.
"The facts are I'm very embarrassed. Very embarrassed," Jones said Tuesday on KTCK-AM.
But Jones also said he believes Phillips can make the necessary changes required to get the Cowboys back into the playoffs.
"There are many ways to go about trying to win in the National Football League," Jones said. "The way we are going and the way we've gone is not working. So we have to look at doing it differently. Let me say this: I believe Wade Phillips can change."
Newman needs surgery: Terence Newman will have arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle after suffering an injury in the second half against the Eagles.
For Newman, the injury was a fitting end to this season. He battled a groin injury during training camp, tried to play through the pain and then ultimately missed five games after midseason sports hernia surgery.
Briefly: The Cowboys signed defensive end Marcus Dixon and offensive lineman Ryan Gibbons to new contracts for 2009. Both players spent last season on the practice squad and earned $88,400.
