If you need to know something about Texas Stadium, Bruce Hardy is the man to talk to.
Hardy has been there from the beginning in 1971, and is still the vice president and general manager of the 37-year-old structure.
He’s seen a lot happen in Texas Stadium, from the best Dallas Cowboys games to the hundreds of other events hosted in the facility.
One thing Hardy said he will never forget about Texas Stadium is the star at midfield.
"The last night Texas Stadium stands, I’m going to sit down on the star and reflect on the ... years I’ve been here," Hardy said.
When the team moves to its new stadium in Arlington, Hardy will no longer be the vice president and general manager of the stadium. He said he’s going to be more of a senior consultant.
However, Hardy has thousands of memories that involve that star and the rest of Texas Stadium.
Cowboys’ 27-17 NFC divisional playoff win over Green Bay to go to NFC Championship Game (Jan. 16, 1994): I sat here at Texas Stadium on Friday night with Jerry [Jones] Jr. and Sr., and I told them, "We’re going to win 27-17." Anytime you host a playoff game, the thrill is amazing.
Emmitt Smith breaks the NFL’s all-time rushing record (Oct. 27, 2002): I knew [Smith] personally and I knew him as a player. It’s always about your relationship with the players. That moment was special because of the kind of person he is and the fact that it was Walter Payton holding that record before him.
Tyler John Tyler beats Plano East 48-44 in Class 5A Division II semifinal playoff game (Nov. 26, 1994): It was exciting because John Tyler ran the kickoff back to win the game. Plano East had come back in the fourth quarter and gone ahead in the game. The game was almost over and so they decided to kick it deep. It was like the Red Sea parted and the return guy scored.
Garth Brooks performs three sold-out concerts (Sept. 23-25, 1993): I remember the sound grid collapsed, so we had to completely redesign the stage before he could go on. That happened on a Friday afternoon, and he performed the following Thursday.
Billy Graham speaks at four-day revival (Oct. 17-20, 2002): It’s the last time anyone would see him around here. We invited him and he finally agreed. It was a big production, and we had to get a lot of people and the local churches behind it. I think a lot of people are going to remember that.
