The Cowboys are close to signing veteran linebacker Carlos Polk, an eight-year pro who has spent his entire career with the Chargers.
To make room on the roster, the Cowboys are expected to put wide receiver Sam Hurd on injured reserve after he underwent surgery on his high-ankle sprain.
Polk obviously has ties with head coach Wade Phillips, the Chargers defensive coordinator from 2004-06.
At 6-2, 262, Polk is more of an outside linebacker and should be able to contribute right away, especially with Anthony Spencer (hamstring) banged up again.
Polk was released at the end of the preseason in favor of younger, cheaper players. However, he should also be able to help out on special teams. Four times in his career he finished a season with double-digit tackles on special teams, including 19 in 2006.

If he still has it , he'll be a good backup , I don't know how much he can contribute on SPT, but he is a proven vet. I wonder why he wasn't picked up earlier ?

He was signed and Hurd hit the IR for the season. I guess that this all but ends the Cowboy tryout to be a future TO. There are still a couple of places that could receive some changes for the Cowboys. Ty Law has been saying that he would like to become a Cowboy...at a slightly lower price than what he asked when free agency was still here.
This linebacker does help a bit for this game, as Burnett is dinged pretty good and Carpenter probably will serve as his replacement for packages. Ware has been going every play, and with Spencer still having a calf injury, Polk will help out. He is a very talented coverage play, and with the current problems on special teams, he has to help.

Thats right CC, he will be an instant ST addition, and "upgrade" IMO. Really surprised that he was available. Must have been well under the radar, so kudos to Jerry for hitting another one out of the park.

I read he can play all 4 lb positions. It sure would be nice if polk could step up and beef up the middle of our defense a bit. I don't really expect him to do anything but add depth and make his biggest contibution on STs. But you never know. Prossman
