ESPN MacMahon: Jerry: 'We've got a player in Doug Free'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dec 22 3:41 PM CT
By Tim MacMahon
IRVING, Texas -- Right tackle Marc Colombo might be able to return for the playoffs. The Dallas Cowboys haven't missed him nearly as much as anticipated while he recovers from a broken fibula and ankle surgery.
That's no knock on Colombo. It's a compliment to his replacement, Doug Free.
The 6-6, 313-pound Free, a fourth-round pick in 2007, appears to have ended the Cowboys' drought of drafting a starting-quality offensive lineman.
The Cowboys haven't had to give Free an inordinate amount of help. He's not as powerful as Colombo, but he has good quickness for his size and does a solid job of sticking on blocks.
"Free is a great example of young players and how they progress when they get to play," owner/general manager Jerry Jones said on KRLD-FM. "There’s just no other way around it. You’ve got to get in games and let them play games and they get better right before your eyes.
"I’m glad, for not only where we are but for the future, that Doug has had this opportunity. As we look to our decisions in the offensive line, we know we’ve got a player in Doug Free." __________________ I totally agree! he stepped in nicely for columbo, and its good to know there is one oline posiion secure for the future! Just like the WR's - given a chance to see what the higher level of play is about - got there.
Good drafting.....

He has the footwork, size, and hip bending to play left tackle, the next step is to see if he can handle that. Prossman

His performance is really a big storyline. He graded out the highest this past week against the New Orleans Saints. That is a major feather in his hat, as well as the team. Things can now be approached a little differently going into this year's draft. Maybe a top interior lineman can now be targeted.

i hope we go get a top LT in this draft.. There are 6 good ones potetially if the juniors come out. Flozell will be 36 next tear I believe. Its time. Now if we get a shot at a Blue chipper wr, I would love that to.rossman

Wonder if Cincinnati still wants to trade a first rounder for Bennett. A second and a first to move up, and then Dallas would still own it's own first rounder...some real fuel for thought there. Phillips has shown that he can hold down the backup/2nd TE slot, and then a later round pickup during the draft...LOL.
