LB DeMarcus Ware wants to play Saturday vs the Saints but right now it's a day-to-day injury.
IRVING, Texas - It was certainly a relieving sight - DeMarcus Ware standing, walking and smiling, looking quite relieved himself after undergoing treatments on Monday.
Not even 24 hours earlier the team's franchise defender suffered what's now being called a neck strain, when he ran headfirst into the hip of Chargers offensive lineman Brandyn Dombrowski. Ware was strapped to a backboard and lifted onto a cart, taken off the field, loaded into an ambulance and transported to a local hospital for tests and evaluation before being released later in the evening.
The first relieving sight in a moment of hushed worry inside Cowboys Stadium came when Ware, while being carried off the field, was able to give a thumbs-up, wiggle his feet, wave his arms and form his fingers into a "W."
"For win the game, I was holding the 'W' up for win, and pointing at the scoreboard " Ware told DallasCowboys.com on his way out of the team's training facility a day after the 20-17 loss to San Diego.
Contrary to some early reports, neither Ware nor the Cowboys were ruling out a return on Saturday night in New Orleans, Wade Phillips repeatedly characterizing the linebacker as "day-to-day."
Ware chatted for several minutes before driving himself home from Valley Ranch.
One day later, how does it feel?
"You know what's weird, it feels better than it did yesterday. Yesterday, you couldn't move it or anything; today it feels like I'm ready to play the game on Saturday to be honest. I cleared the little test they give you where you push and pull your neck to check all your strength - I didn't have any last night, but today I had all my strength and everything back.
Is it swollen at all?
"The swelling has gone down, it's still just a little sore. So we're just going to see how it works out."
Do they already have you undergoing treatments to rehab the neck?
"Yeah, I just went to treatment. You do the STIM machine and the ice and everything, but it's working out."
Were you scared? What do you think when you're on the ground like that?
"You know what, usually you don't think about yourself going down in the game. Especially, you've seen the scenes where guys are leaving on the stretcher and it's not good. When you're on the stretcher, usually it's neck injuries or something that's really bad. Just to be still walking right now, and still being able to function is a good thing."
Did you ever lose consciousness?
"No, I was awake the whole time."
How aware were you of the level of concern everyone had for you at that moment?
"I knew. A lot of my family was there, so I just wanted to make sure the fans and my family knew I was alright. I just wanted to let them know I was OK. When you're strapped down there's still going to be worries, but as long as you're moving your limbs and still there, not foggy - I just wanted to let them know I'm good."
You said you feel like you're ready to play against the Saints. How real of a possibility is that, considering the need for extra precaution with neck injuries?
"I mean, when you have an injury like that you've always got to treat it with precaution, but it's all about the player and how he feels, and doing the right things at the right time. We'll just have to see." Home | Email | Print | Register for New Alerts | RSS
