IRVING — Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips did not give his kicker a vote of confidence Monday, a day after Nick Folk missed yet another field goal.
The Cowboys will not bring in another kicker to compete with Folk, but might have a kick-off competition between Folk and rookie kickoff specialists David Buehler for the job.
“He’s still struggling,” Phillips said of Folk. “We’ve got to address that and see what more we can do. We tried a new holder. …He just hasn’t made as many [lately]. So, part of it is to keep working at it. …But we’ve got to do something.”
Phillips added that “there are other options that we have that we’re discussing”, although he is not confident the Cowboys can find anyone better than Folk from the outside.
So the focus is on Buehler, who made 26 of 33 field goals at USC. The Cowboys drafted him in the fifth round to kickoff after they had no touchbacks last season, and Buehler has 20 touchbacks.
Buehler made a 39-yard field goal at Oakland in the preseason.
Folk, who had surgery on his right hip in May, has missed six of his past nine tries. He has missed at least one field goal in each of the past five games. The Cowboys changed holders before Sunday’s game with Tony Romo replacing punter Mat McBriar.
