Mailbag: Should Buehler Get A Shot On Field Goals?
(Editor's Note: Each day we will take the 2 best questions for our staff writers to answer from the Mailbag. "Click here" to email questions now.)
COREY JORAN - ELIZABETH CITY, NC: We drafted a kicker to handle kickoffs this past offseason. We drafted him for his leg. Now I know what Nick Folk has done for us in the past, but how many does he have to miss before we look at David Buehler? He can't be any worse than Folk right now, right? Or maybe let him kick long field goals and keep Folk in for shorter ones?
Rob: It's not about Buehler's leg strength. It's about his accuracy, and apparently the coaching staff isn't comfortable using him in these critical games yet. I do agree that the Cowboys will have to look at other options if things don't go well this Sunday. But right now the problems don't appear to be all about Folk.
Josh: OK, maybe let him kick the long ones. Like the 57-yarder at the end of the half that Folk didn't really have a chance on against New York. But otherwise, they still believe Folk's a better option, and so do I. Some of the misses have been because of the holder. Maybe Buehler can do that.
Nick: I don't think the Cowboys trust Buehler at all right now. You may not have confidence in Folk's kicks, especially the long ones. I don't think the Cowboys have confidence in any kick that Buehler attempted right now.
BRANDON GORDON - READING, PA: With the next season possibly being uncapped, do you see the Cowboys getting rid of an aging and sometimes unreliable Flozell Adams?
Rob: Do they have a better option for one of the most important positions on the team? Doug Free has done a pretty good job filling in at right tackle. He actually might be a better fit on the left side, but we haven't seen him there much. Adams has quietly done a nice job this season. You have to live with the false starts, but he's handled some elite pass rushers. You're right, he will be 35 next year. At some point a replacement has to be groomed.
Josh: No, I don't think the Cowboys will part ways with Adams, because I don't think they have a better option at left tackle, and I don't think they'll find one between now and then. If they're just trying to save money I can think of a couple other guys they could better afford to do without. But hey, they'll evaluate everything at the end of the season. Maybe they'll think Doug Free is good enough to start. But I doubt it. Flozell's a pretty good player.
Nick: Sure, that's a possibility because of his age and contract. There are other guys that will be in that boat, too. But to call him sometimes unreliable is a bit reckless. Don't forget that you've got a big investment back there throwing the ball. If you're ready to replace him an unproven player, go ahead. I doubt the Cowboys are willing to do that.
