Live chat with Todd Archer about the Dallas Cowboys
10:59 After a few days "off," let's go with some questions. I'm sure you want to talk about December, right?
Monday November 30, 2009 10:59
11:00 [Comment From JakeJake: ]
Ken Hamlin was out of the lineup. In your opinion, how big of an impact did his absence make on the game?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:00 Jake
11:01 I think Alan Ball has filled in OK. He's had some miscues, but so has Hamlin when he's been on the field. As the games get bigger down the stretch, I'd like to have Hamlin back even if he hasn't made many impact plays. I'd be surprised if he is back for this game. They're starting practice now, so we'll have a report in a bit.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:01
11:01 [Comment From Bill In DCBill In DC: ]
So, what do you think the chances are for a Cowboys win in NY this Sunday - and why (or why not)?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:01 Bill In DC
11:03 I think they have a good chance but this is setting up like the Packers' game to me. The Packers HAD to win that game to save their season. The Giants HAVE to have this game to save their season. The Cowboys didn't react too well at Lambeau. If they can protect the ball and force Eli to beat them, I like their chances better. Tony Romo is 2-0 as a starter at Giants Stadium.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:03
11:03 [Comment From hosshoss: ]
Will JJ hire Jason Garrett as HC and Wade as DC next year ?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:03 hoss
11:03 Maybe on the first part. No on the second part. Why would Wade want to do that? He has pride.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:03
11:04 [Comment From TomTom: ]
Regarding the "50 greatest" list, Clint Murchison strikes me as a glaring omission. He founded the franchise, after all, putting Landry, Schram, and Brandt in place to create its identity.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:04 Tom
11:05 You're right. It's a subjective list for sure. I can't tell you where I had him on my list because I filed it a long time ago. I think he was overshadowed so much by Schramm that that could've been the reason.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:05
11:05 [Comment From MorrisMorris: ]
How is the health of Tony and Jason?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:05 Morris
11:06 Both are doing OK. Sore but OK. Witten was in a boot after the Raiders game and I can see a situation where he will be limited in practice because of his foot injury. That can linger for some time, so they'd be wise to keep him as fresh as possible for the game. By the way, Hamlin will do some work on the side with associate trainer Britt Brown to test his high right ankle sprain.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:06
11:06 [Comment From ChrisChris: ]
What is your prediction for the Cowboys 5 remaining games?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:06 Chris
11:07 It's only fair to answer this one because I asked you guys on the blog to predict the finish. I'm leaning toward 2-3 but that's because I'm unsure on Sunday's game against NY. That Washington game is going to be harder than people think, too. But 2-3 puts them at 10-6.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:07
11:07 [Comment From hosshoss: ]
Will dallas go after a qb in the draft or some one else your thoughts?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:07 hoss
11:08 I don't see that happening but I am of the belief you draft a QB every year. They have Kitna for a couple more years. They drafted Stephen McGee this year. Since they don't really look at that position often, I'd say they won't draft a QB.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:08
11:08 [Comment From ChrisChris: ]
True or False: 10 Wins will be enough for the Cowboys to make the playoffs.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:08 Chris
11:08 True ... I think.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:08
11:09 [Comment From Scott in TexasScott in Texas: ]
Nick Folk has been struggling. Are we going to have a kicking controversy?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:09 Scott in Texas
11:09 I don't think there will be a controversy because Buehler isn't ready to handle the FG duties, too. He is not accurate enough just from what we've seen in practice. Should there be some worry about Folk? Absolutely, but I think one kick can straighten him out, too.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:09
11:10 [Comment From EricEric: ]
Based on his play this season, what are the chances The Cowboys lock up Sensabaugh to a long term deal this offseason?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:10 Eric
11:11 Well, here's the deal on that - he will be a restricted free agent this year because there won't be an extension in the CBA. I don't think they look to lock him up long term yet, certainly not a Hamlin-type deal. But if he's willing to take a 3-year deal for $9 mil, I'd look into something like that. I don't think he would though.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:11
11:11 [Comment From DeltonDelton: ]
Why is it that Wade gets so exited about opponents missed field goals? Don't recall ever seeing a head coach get as exited as he does after an opposing teams miscue, thoughts?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:11 Delton
11:12 He does have some strange celebrations, I'll give you that. I saw Jeff Fisher get pretty excited a couple of games ago when Houston missed a field goal at the end.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:12
11:12 [Comment From ByronByron: ]
How do you think Doug Free is going to hold up in the Giants game? So far he seems to be doing a pretty decent job!
Monday November 30, 2009 11:12 Byron
11:14 This will be a big test with Justin Tuck or Osi Umenyiora because the Giants will move their linemen around. You're right, I think he's done a decent job so far. I don't think teams look at him as a weakness and I think the Cowboys have given him some help, too. But things can change quickly in this league. I do, however, think he's done enough to be thought of as a future starter.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:14
11:14 [Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Felix looks like he's close to 100%, Marion is looking like he's not limping anymore, and Choice makes big plays every game (when he gets a chance)... Would an increased role in our running game help our December woes?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:14 Guest
11:16 I'm not sure Barber is 100 percent yet. He didn't look like he had that burst on his swing pass out of the backfield Thursday. Something's not right there. As far as more carries for the running game - I'm not there so much. You need balance. But the more third-and-shorts you're in the better. Jones and Barber certainly are healthier this year than they were last year.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:16
11:16 [Comment From R BonnerR Bonner: ]
Do the cowboys draft a OLT or a DB in the 1st round
Monday November 30, 2009 11:16 R Bonner
11:17 Tell me where the Cowboys are picking and who's available. That's actually a Babe Laufenberg answer when we ask him things like that. I'd say they'd look to the O-line (guard or tackle) before a DB. Are you thinking safety or corner? I'd lean toward corner because you can never have enough.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:17
11:17 [Comment From PKPK: ]
What happened to penalizing a player for "tossing" or "throwing" a ball after a play? I remember we got killed by that penalty over the past couple of years. Now, players do it all the time and no flag. Did the NFL officially back off on that rule?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:17 PK
11:18 The rule is still there and Terence Newman was called for a it a couple of weeks ago I think. I haven't seen what you're talking about.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:18
11:18 [Comment From AaronAaron: ]
Seemed like Cricket was in the game more against the Raiders...coincidence that we ran the ball down their throats? Also, do you notice the Cowboys quietly paralleling the season the Giants had when they won it all?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:18 Aaron
11:20 He and John Phillips are splitting time at fullback and I think Phillips' playing time might be more than Anderson's. It will mirror it if they play an undefeated Saints team ina few weeks and have a "moral" victory. I'd have to look at the Giants' numbers in '07 but they did go 3-2 in December that year. If the Cowboys go 3-2, then I'll go with the theory.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:20
11:20 [Comment From chrischris: ]
Wow...2-3 for December...who are your 2 and who are your 3? I see Dallas winning at home against San Diego and Philly, and taking 2 of 3 on road at least. What about this defense doesnt make you more optimistic? i just dont get it....
Monday November 30, 2009 11:20 chris
11:22 The two are the home games, IMO. I think they get those. If there's one thing I don't like about the defense it is the inability to take the ball away. They have to help the offense more ... just as the offense has to help the defense and not turn it over. If they can give the offense some shorter fields, I'd feel better. They're playing really well, but not dominant.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:22
11:22 [Comment From arynaryn: ]
What has happened to Sam Hurd? Why hasn't he been getting much playing time at receiver lately?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:22 aryn
11:22 Who should he play more than? You can't get everybody on the field and they like Ogletree's speed more than Hurd's.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:22
11:23 [Comment From R BonnerR Bonner: ]
I was thinking Safety Taylor Mays or Eric Berry
Monday November 30, 2009 11:23 R Bonner
11:23 Neither guy will be there if the Cowboys are in the 20s. And I don't see them trading up.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:23
11:23 [Comment From TimTim: ]
I think Patrick Crayton should start along with Miles Austin. What's your opinion on that?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:23 Tim
11:24 We've talked about that here and we just can't see that happening because of everything Jerry Jones gave up for Roy Williams.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:24
11:24 [Comment From AaronAaron: ]
Realistically, what needs to happen for Wade to get an extension? Playoff win, NFC Championship, Super Bowl appearance, Super Bowl win?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:24 Aaron
11:25 I'd say a playoff win would help him get the option year of the deal.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:25
11:25 [Comment From joejoe: ]
when can we stop blaming wade phillips for everything...he has fixed the defense and said he has no input to the offensive gameplan...and the offense is the group struggling...wade is doin his job and garrett is not...
Monday November 30, 2009 11:25 joe
11:27 He's the head coach. If he doesn't agree with some of the play calling he should say something to Garrett during a game. He can't come in the day after and say, 'We should've run the ball more.' Say that on gameday. Saying that, the defense has done well. He's getting credit for that, isn't he?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:27
11:27 [Comment From Michael MalliaMichael Mallia: ]
Do you think D-Ware's foot injury is affecting his play? He seem's to be 1/2 step away from creating major havoc.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:27 Michael Mallia
11:28 He has seven sacks since he was diagnosed with the stress fracture, so I think he's doing OK. He's on pace for 10 sacks, which would be his fourth straight in double figures. I think the biggest issue has been how much attention he's received from opponents more than the foot.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:28
11:28 [Comment From jakejake: ]
The Wildcat has really only featured Choice. Felix seemed to thrive in this formation at Arkansas. Any inside information about the Boys using a Felix wrinkle of that formation?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:28 jake
11:29 Felix didn't play the QB position in the Wildcat at Arkansas. Darren McFadden did. Felix is doing the same thing here as he did there.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:29
11:30 [Comment From ByronByron: ]
At the beginning of the year Bennett was being moved into the slot and all over the place and it seemed to open things up, why did they go away from that, Marty B is a beast?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:30 Byron
11:30 He's a beast? Really? He has the potential to be but he hasn't shown it in games. If you don't demonstrate that in games, it's hard for the coaches to call a lot of plays for you.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:30
11:31 [Comment From G CoopG Coop: ]
Todd, While we do have some weapons on offense, do you forsee this team getting more playmakers on offense? Saints, Vikings both have them...
Monday November 30, 2009 11:31 G Coop
11:32 Jerry Jones has said he doesn't see them drafting a WR - at least in early rounds. They're set at TE. They're set at RB. I'd be surprised if they go after more skill players early in the draft or free agency.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:32
11:32 [Comment From ChoppyChoppy: ]
Haven't seen Victor Butler lately, how come? I thought he was a pretty good pass rusher.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:32 Choppy
11:32 The coaches don't trust him enough yet. It's that simple. He will get a snap or two when Spencer needs a break but nothing will be set for him yet.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:32
11:33 [Comment From Michael MalliaMichael Mallia: ]
What happened to Whitten's run after catch yards? Although he is a great third down receiver he seem to go down at contact.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:33 Michael Mallia
11:34 He averaged 20 yards a catch vs. Oakland. A couple of things here - he's not running as many routes down the seam as he has in the past. He's running more curls and stuff to the flat that makes it hard to get some YAC. And teams know he is the "hot" route guy most of the time so they can limit his yards after the catch, too.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:34
11:35 [Comment From ByronByron: ]
What are your thoughts on Spencer? Many wanted to label him a bust but I think he played pretty well!
Monday November 30, 2009 11:35 Byron
11:35 Over the last month he might be the best defensive player. He's showing the game is more than just sacks. The fact that he got two against Oakland, however, bodes well. If he can threaten the other side that will help Ware and Jay Ratliff. I like what he's done. I just want more pass rush from him. Maybe I'm being too greedy.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:35
11:36 [Comment From BrandonBrandon: ]
Have you noticed that this team looks lost when it comes to screen plays? You would think that using Felix in a few designed screens per game would be a dynamic threat to opposing defenses but we see very few of these plays called. When they are called, it looks like a bunch of lost players running around. I think putting the effort into getting better at this would be very beneficial to the offense. What is your take?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:36 Brandon
11:37 A lot goes into running the screens and you're right, the Cowboys struggle with it. Some of it's timing. Some of it's linemen being on the move. Some of it is the back's ability to break away. Philly does a great job on screens. I haven't been around here that long but this has been a problem for years, they tell me.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:37
11:38 [Comment From KrisKris: ]
We'll almost have a second draft class next year with Brewster, Jason Williams and Hamlin all coming back from inj. It's like 3 classes in 2 yrs.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:38 Kris
11:38 That's one way to look at it. Williams, however, has been healthy since October.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:38
11:38 [Comment From Bobby CarpenterBobby Carpenter: ]
I may still not be living up to my 1st round draft status, but is it safe to say I've left the bust label far behind me at this point?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:38 Bobby Carpenter
11:39 Shouldn't you be at practice, Bobby? It's hard to lose the "bust" label in 11 games as a backup, but you've done a decent job as the nickel linebacker. No matter what you do, however, some people won't give you any credit. That's just how it goes, but I think you've done a nice job in that role.

Monday November 30, 2009 11:39
11:40 [Comment From opensesameopensesame: ]
Why don't the Cowboys (both offensively and defensively) dictate more to there opponents? I believe they are capable of doing some exotic things on offense...so why don't they try it more often?!
Monday November 30, 2009 11:40 opensesame
11:41 They have a top-10 offense, so I don't know why they would need to be too exotic. I would like to see a trick play or two, but that doesn't mean you're dictating to the other team. If you're dictating to the other team, that means you're imposing your will. That's not what a trick play does.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:41
11:41 [Comment From PhillipPhillip: ]
What do you think is the most overrated team in the AFC/NFC?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:41 Phillip
11:42 Most overrated team - Denver? Cincinnati? I'm sure a lot of people will say the Cowboys. I think 8-3 is about right where they should be. I love what the Bengals have done this year, but I can see a scenario in which they lose their first playoff game at home like they did a few years ago.

I am hoping the saints win tonight anf next week. Getting Images of 06 when we beat the undeafeated colts!!!!
Monday November 30, 2009 11:42 Undefeated Killer
11:44 Let's end on this one ... imagine the hype for that game for it to be shown on NFL Network. Yikes. I think the Cowboys would like the challenge but they have lost five in a row to the Saints. And as well as the D has played lately, I'd have a hard time seeing them shutting down Drew Brees and Sean Payton.
Thanks for all of the questions. Keep checking out the blog during the week for updates, anecdotes and news. See you guys next time.

What has happened to Sam Hurd? Why hasn't he been getting much playing time at receiver lately?
Monday November 30, 2009 11:22 aryn
11:22 Who should he play more than? You can't get everybody on the field and they like Ogletree's speed more than Hurd's.

Monday November 30, 2009 11:23 R Bonner

Monday November 30, 2009 11:23 Tim
11:24 We've talked about that here and we just can't see that happening because of everything Jerry Jones gave up for Roy Williams.

Realistically, what needs to happen for Wade to get an extension? Playoff win, NFC Championship, Super Bowl appearance, Super Bowl win?

when can we stop blaming wade phillips for everything...he has fixed the defense and said he has no input to the offensive gameplan...and the offense is the group struggling...wade is doin his job and garrett is not...

Do you think D-Ware's foot injury is affecting his play? He seem's to be 1/2 step away from creating major havoc.
Monday November 30, 2009 11:27 Michael Mallia
11:28 He has seven sacks since he was diagnosed with the stress fracture, so I think he's doing OK. He's on pace for 10 sacks, which would be his fourth straight in double figures. I think the biggest issue has been how much attention he's received from opponents more than the foot.

Todd, While we do have some weapons on offense, do you forsee this team getting more playmakers on offense? Saints, Vikings both have them...

11:32 Jerry Jones has said he doesn't see them drafting a WR - at least in early rounds. They're set at TE. They're set at RB. I'd be surprised if they go after more skill players early in the draft or free agency.
