IRVING - Much was made of Greg Ellis' homecoming on Thursday, but Anthony Spencer stole the show.
The Cowboys got rid of Ellis last June to allow Spencer to take over fulltime at strongside outside linebacker.
Ellis started Thursday, but swelling in his left knee and lower leg kept him sidelined in the second half.
If Ellis watched the rest of the game on TV in the locker room, he saw Spencer finish with eight tackles, his first two sacks of the season, three quarterback hits, two tackles for loss and one pass breakup.
"One sack he made was really outstanding," Phillips said. "He was rushing inside then came back outside and then went through two people. It just showed his athletic ability and his tenacity. He's after them every play."
Dallas defensive end Marcus Spears agreed. "He's always around the ball - always," Spears said. "It will continue. He's a real good football player."
There's no doubt Ellis is a better pass rusher than Spencer. But Spencer is the better athlete and like Spears said is always around the ball. Does that mean he will be better than Ellis in the long run? Time will tell, but I prefer a pure pass rusher playing opposite DeMarcus Ware because it makes Ware that much more dangerous. __________________
