With Ken Hamlin out because of a high right ankle sprain, Alan Ball will start at free safety Sunday vs. Washington.
This will be the first start of Ball's career.
Ball could move to cornerback if the Cowboys suffer an injury during the game and Mike Hamlin will be active for the first time this year.

At 6-1, 188 pounds, Alan Ball might not be the prototypical safety, but he will get the chance to replace Ken Hamlin, who is one inch and 21 pounds heavier, Sunday against Washington.
"It's a position we worked him in all along," coach Wade Phillips said. "He obviously is very versatile. He came in and played corner and made a big play a couple games ago, but he's ready to go in."
In limited playing time this year, Ball has been credited with five tackles and he also has a pass deflection, but this will be the first start of his career. He is second on the Cowboys with 12 special teams tackles, although his time as a gunner on the punt team might be limited with an expanded defensive role.
Phillips is not too worried about Ball's size.
"He's so aggressive," Phillips said. "I mean we've seen him on special teams and he's very aggressive. And he tackles well. He's not a big guy but he tackles well. It's a concern. Their running game is a concern because they have a strong running game. They had 174 yards last week against Denver, who we know can play the run pretty well."
