Smoot
Veteran cornerback Fred Smoot has been working out at free safety to provide depth behind LaRon Landry, according to the Redskins Insider. Last year, Shawn Springs put in some work at safety. Secondary coach Jerry Gray wants his players to be as versatile as possible, and obviously he thinks a veteran has a better shot at learning two positions than a younger player.
By the way, I was in Baltimore on Thursday for the Redskins-Ravens preseason game. You'd never know it, though, because the Michael Vick news came down early in the second quarter. The one thing I remember about the game is that second-year cornerback Justin Tryon struggled mightily.
I'm sensitive to the fact that many of you are ready for me to provide some non-Vick items. And fortunately, I was able to spend time with both Albert Haynesworth and Andre Carter on Thursday. On Monday, I'll be visiting with some Redskins players (and possibly the head coach) via phone. The Vick story interrupted my visit to Redskins Park, but I'll try to make it up to you this week.
Thanks for your patience. I think most of you realize how huge the Vick story was (and is), and have been understanding. Now it's time to start spreading the wealth again. Look for the Haynesworth interview Sunday.
