'Not... If, But When' Vick Will Be Signed
UPDATED (11:24 a.m.)...
Michael Vick's agent, Joel Segal, said during a radio interview Tuesday there's no longer any doubt that the recently reinstated quarterback will be signed by an NFL team.
"I'm very optimistic," Segal said on Washington's ESPN 980 during a visit to the Redskins' training camp. "It's not a matter of if, but when. And Mike's excited with the opportunity that the commissioner has given him. He's ready to go help a club win."
Segal declined to identify any of the teams interested in Vick.
"There are a lot of teams interested," Segal said, according to an account of the interview on the Redskins' Web site. "Mike's excited and looking forward to working and getting back. He's working hard every day."
Segal watched the Redskins' practice Tuesday with Vinny Cerrato, the team's executive vice president of football operations. But Segal said the visit was related to his Redskins clients, including quarterback Jason Campbell, not Vick.
"I'm not here for Mike," Segal said during the radio interview, done with a station owned by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. "I'm here for these guys."
Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, in a separate radio interview Tuesday with ESPN, said he thinks Vick is about to sign with a team.
"I think something is gonna happen this week," said Dungy, who's serving as an adviser to Vick.
Dungy's comments Tuesday echoed those that he made on NBC's broadcast Sunday night of the Hall of Fame Game. Dungy now works as an NFL analyst for NBC.
Dungy did not identify any of the clubs pursuing Vick, either.
A person familiar with the deliberations said Monday that at least five teams are interested in Vick.
"I don't know where he's gonna end up," said the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the talks are at a sensitive stage. "I can't tell you which teams, but I know there's at least five."
The source also said all indications are that Vick is in very good shape after training recently with speed coach Tom Shaw.
Vick was conditionally reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell just more than two weeks ago, enabling him to sign with a team and participate in his club's final two preseason games if he's signed. Goodell is to rule by Week 6 of the season on Vick's eligibility to participate in regular season games.
Vick missed the last two NFL seasons while serving his federal sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation in Virginia.
He is a free agent after being released by the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason.
Vick reportedly is to participate in a nationally televised interview Sunday on "60 Minutes" on CBS.
