Eagles coach Reid: No more injury updates
Philadelphia Daily News
BETHLEHEM - Eagles coach Andy Reid announced yesterday that he will stop updating the team's injury situation, after news of Stewart Bradley's torn ACL was reported several hours before Reid had planned to announce it, at a news conference following training-camp practice.
Reid told reporters that some of them had violated a "pact" made when he became head coach in 1999 that "I would disclose to you the injuries, that you just stay away from the players and the other personnel in the organization, and I would take care of you."
The coach did not identify specific targets. News of the Bradley knee injury was first reported on WIP by afternoon host Howard Eskin.
The Daily News attempted to contact Bradley in the wake of Eskin's report. Bradley's cell phone was answered by Eagles head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder, who said any information would have to come from Reid.
Reid said he would resume providing injury updates when he decides that "people can abide by the rules."
While Reid has made it clear that he wants to be the source of Eagles injury information, reporters routinely call players, agents, medical personnel and anyone else who might have knowledge of a particular situation.
"We have always pursued news in a variety of ways in line with appropriate journalism standards, from a variety of sources and we will continue to do so to provide for our readers as complete and accurate an account as possible," Daily News executive sports editor Josh Barnett said.
