Posted on Fri, Jul. 10, 2009 NFL rookie from Phila. shot in Montco By Liz Wagner INQUIRER STAFF WRITER blog.syracuse.com/today/2009/07/large_090710_brinkley.jpgCurtis Brinkley, a former record-setting West Catholic High School football star who was recently signed by the San Diego Chargers, is in a Philadelphia hospital today after being shot in a neighboring suburb. Brinkley was reported in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Einstein Medical Center. Cheltenham Township police said Brinkley, 23, was stopped in his car at the intersection of Spring Avenue and Ashbourne Road just after midnight when a gunman walked up and started blasting with a handgun. Brinkley, who lives in Philadelphia and reportedly went to Cheltenham to pickup his sister, sped away to escape. The gunman fled in a waiting car. Police found Brinkley wounded in his car nearby. He was taken to Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. After playing for West Catholic, Brinkley was a former running back at Syracuse, where he played four seasons. He was eligible for the 2009 NFL Draft, but went undrafted. In April, Brinkley agreed to a free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers. At West Catholic, Brinkley rushed for 7,429 yards and 85 touchdowns, breaking the Philadelphia prep school record previously held by NFL running back Kevin Jones. Brinkley spent one season at Hargrave Military Academy before enrolling at Syracuse.
