I have always liked Jay Ratliff but he was a monster today!!! This was a HUGE game for us and a much needed win and Ratliff was outstanding in it. His two sacks and a couple of major stops were key to our holding them to 10 points. Here's to you Jay

Getting some push in the middle is essential in a 3-4, so hopefully Ratliff and Tank can continue making plays from the nose.
Portis was still able to bust off a few nice runs but he has been doing that all season, against everyone.
Leaving the middle of the defense wide open still seems to be part of Stewarts plans, and until someone slaps him up side the head, will remain a weakness on this defense.
For the life of me, I really just cant understand that defensive set. You know the one, where the DL lines up outside of the guards, revealing a void in the middle of the defense big enough to drive a tractor trailer through?
The same alignment again in this game, that was so obvious to Campbell that he called an audible on 3rd and 8, and simply ran right up the gut for an easy 1st down.
If Stewart keeps that alignment in his repertoire, they might as well have a sign on the sideline that they can put out in the middle of the defense that says "On Ramp", or "open Access".
That alignment is a head shaker, and if anyone wants to shed some light, as to why it is being used in situations, I sure would like to know, because it has been exposed relentlessly all season.
OK, now I feel so much better, getting that off my chest.
Great Win in their house, and Wade going for it late in the 4th quarter, on the 4th and 2, rather than kicking the FG, was a statement. There are always plays every season that you can look back on and say, that play was where the momentum started swinging in our favor.
That play right there, was how you finish off an opponent, you put your foot on their throat and choke em out!

Jay did have a great day. I thought both sides of the line of scrimmage did well. It seems like it has been forever since I could say that. Prossman

Here's to you Jay Jay Ratliff might not be the prototypical nose tackle in a 3-4 defense but he is closing in on having the best sack season by an interior linemen in the Jerry Jones Era. Ratliff has six sacks, which is second on the Cowboys behind DeMarcus Ware and second most among interior linemen this year in the NFL. Tennessee's Albert Haynesworth and Minnesota's Kevin Williams have seven apiece. The most sacks in a season during the Jones' Era is 7.5 set by Jimmie Jones in 1990 and Chad Hennings in 1994. La'Roi Glover had seven sacks in 2004 and 6.5 sacks in 2002. Source: DMN

Good stats class on Jay, Eric...you've been adding quite abit on discussions here.
;D I just want to see a complimentary return to sack production from the Ellis/Spencer strongside of the defensive line.
Golden, I am thinking that the alignment is geared at trying to discourage outside effectiveness down the passing lanes, by starting the players gap outside, and then hoping they are able to react back inside effectively if a team does what Washington did as last night. The linebacker on that side first bit outside on a pass defense as opposed to reading a QB draw and being able to downhill stop a body exposed Campbell.
This same play brought out another issue although, and that is the egg-shell approach by both Watkins and Jenkins during this game. On the kickoff return prior to the first half, Jenkins all but ran away from a fullback block that sprang the very long return by Washington. Then, on the same QB draw, Watkins was run over by Campbell and gave up an additional five to eight yards after contact. You don't get a lot of open field shots at demolishing an opposing QB, and Watkins instead, GOT RAN OVER. I think there are questions in the secondary as to toughness....Jenkings refused to tackle Jacobs the game before also.
