The rule went in, his abilities went out! Lost his confidence. The Horsecollar made up for his poor technique.
So before the rule he played balls out knowing he could always resort to the Horsecollar if he needed to make a tackle!

So before the rule he played balls out knowing he could always resort to the Horsecollar if he needed to make a tackle! If you watch that video there is only one tackle using the horsecollar. So while I think the rule has played a part in his demise I don't think that is all of it

Roy had the benifit of having a future hall of safety Darren Woodson, there to help him and cover for him. Once Darren retired roy swiftly went down hill. Prossman

Roy Williams, plain and simply, got professionally lazy. He is a liability on the field now. If he wasn't at least adept at run defense, then he wouldn't even have a job with Dallas any more. His salary could end his stay with the Cowboys by the time that next camp comes around. I would trade him for what ever anyone wanted to give up...It's time Dallas moved onto someone who both can tackle AND defend a tight end at the least. What a novel idea, tackle and defend the pass.

The biggest difference: RW was playing 7 yards off the line of scrimmage in the old Mike Zimmer defense. In Brian Stewart's alignment, Roy is now playing 9 to 10 yards off the line. At least, its what was reported in a DMN article a few months ago. Its much easier for the opposing Qb to find BigRoy, nowadays. Or should I say, Watkins Since Roy has been placed on IR for the rest of the year. If, Roy Williams is released this coming offseason? Watkins needs to prove he can play, right now!!! Btw, "Right Now" is a great song.
One last thought, didn't Watkins play free safety in college??
