That was after he called the Cowboys 27-16 victory over the Packers in Week 3. Now, as he prepares for Sunday night's Cowboys-Redskins game, he doesn't know what to expect.
"They just looked - after the first three games - like they would be 9-0 or maybe 8-1," Madden said on a NBC conference call. "People were writing, 'Are they going to be the Patriots of last year? And I kind of agreed with that."
So what happened?
"The defense - I thought it was going to be better than they were," Madden said.
Not the injury to Tony Romo?
"When the quarterback goes down it's easy to say that's the whole thing," he said. "It's not."
Madden believes that the Cowboys defense relatively high ranking in sacks (fifth in the NFL) is an empty number.
"(DeMarcus) Ware is a good pass rusher and I like (Jay) Ratliff inside," he said, adding that Greg Ellis has "not been Ellis." And "I don't see any pressure from the defensive ends."

I'm hoping that Spencer makes a marked improvement with his increased time on the field now.

What hasn't been said is how horribly ineffective BJ was at QB. Dallas played a red zone offense all game long. There were constant 3 and outs, with no real belief by the defense that BJ could lead this team back from a 7 point deficit, unless they played flawless. The defense definitely had its problems but being overexposed was a HUGE one. Prossman
