Signing Gerald Sensabaugh should benefit young cornerbacks 2:22 PM Wed, Mar 18, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips One of the best things about signing Gerald Sensabaugh was that it nipped in the bud talk of turning Orlando Scandrick into a free safety.
Maybe the 5-10, 190-pound Scandrick could have fared well as a cornerback/free safety hybrid, but I'd much rather have him competing to start opposite Terence Newman at his natural position. It also significantly increases the odds that first-round pick Mike Jenkins will fulfill his potential.
Consider this quote from South Florida defensive coordinator Wally Burnham while discussing Jenkins before last year's draft: "One thing he needs to do is work harder, learn that every play has an impact, whether it's in practice or a game. He's gotta learn that -- 'This play is very, very important. Don't take a play off.'"
What better way to make Jenkins work hard than have him fight for a job? If he takes plays off during training camp, he'll probably spend the season watching Scandrick from the sideline, waiting for passing downs to get on the field.
