Don't look for changes to overtime rule 3:13 PM Wed, Mar 18, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz Todd Archer E-mail News tips The NFL will hold its annual Owners' meetings next week in Dana Point, Calif., and changing the overtime rule is not on the agenda.
Competition committee co-chairman Rich McKay said there does not appear to be a big push to change the current set up from the teams or the players. According to league stats, 43.4 percent of overtime games were won by the team that won the coin flip on the first possession. The teams that won the coin flip won 63% of the games overall.
"They're comfortable with the fact that they had a chance to play defense," McKay said. "The game is decided in sudden death and there is a sense of they like the system and the excitement the system brings. And there's not really a complaint by them that, 'Oh, we're not getting a chance to match,' because in their feelings it's, 'Hey, we could've helped ourselves. All we had to do was stop them.'"
McKay said there is some thought of moving the kickoffs up but the data suggests that most overtime games won on field goals are not a result of starting position. McKay said the average winning field goal attempt in overtime was around 37 yards.
"It means teams made it to the 20-yard line and had a real drive," McKay said.
